AUGUSTA — Peter Elliot Nichols, 54, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Gray Birch following a long and courageous struggle with brain cancer.
Peter was born in Augusta, Jan. 4, 1948, the son of Kenneth L. and Margaret A. (Kelley) Nichols.
During high school (class of 1966), Peter become interested in Indian culture and joined the original Maine Archaeology Society with its eight charter members.
Later he obtained a bachelor of arts degree in anthropology from the University of Maine at Orono, which led to many projects with both the state and federal government.
Pete also had many hobbies — guns, hunting, fishing, restoring antique cars, etc. He was well-known for his extensive collection of ancient Indian artifacts and rare pieces from the Benedict Arnold Expedition.
He was predeceased by his mother in 1998.
Peter is survived by his father of Augusta; two brothers, Kenneth Jr. of New Hampshire and Dennis A. of Readfield; and two favorite nephews, Nathaniel and Ethan Nichols, both of Juneau, Alaska.
By request, there will be no visiting hours or public service. A private graveside service will be held at the family lot in Mount Hope Cemetery in the spring.
Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, Augusta.

WINTHROP — Henry V. "Pete" Peterson Sr., 94, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Nicholson's Rehabilitation and Long Term Care after a five-year illness.
He was born in Beverly, Mass., June 2, 1907, the son of Victor Knute and Frieda (Anderson) Peterson.
He was educated in Beverly public schools, and was employed for 42 years by Binney and Smith, Inc. (Crayola), retiring in 1966.
In 1929, he married Margaret W. Creeden, of Danvers, Mass., at St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish in Danvers.
After retirement, they moved to Wilmont, N.H., then to Center Barnstead, N.H., to Clearmont, Fla., and finally moving to Maine in 1997. They entered Nicholson's together in July 1997.
His beloved wife of 69 years died Nov. 9, 1998.
He is survived by two sons, Henry "Peter" V. Peterson Jr., and his wife, Joan, of Wayne, and Jan C. Peterson, and his wife, Sara, of Bent Creek, Va.; a sister, Violet P. Wheelen, of Danvers; seven grandchildren, Paula, Andrea, Bart, Richard, Julie, Orin and Christine; eight great-grandchildren, Briana, Corey, Melissa, Brittany, Courtney, Austin, Kyle and Michael; one great-great- grandson, Andre, two nieces, Joan and Linda, and numerous grandnieces and nephews. He also leaves his special family of caregivers at Nicholson's, whose loving care contributed so much to his final years.
Pete was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church, Winthrop.
There will be no visiting at this time, and services will be held at a later date in Danvers at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop.

AUGUSTA - Peter Gregory Beals, 65, of Augusta and Welaka, Fla., died Wednesday evening, July 21, 2004, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.
He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Aug. 8, 1938, the son of Alton Nickerson and Annie Josephine (Burke) Beals.
Peter grew up in Rye Beach, N.H., graduating from Portsmouth High School in Portsmouth, N.H., in 1956. He served in the Navy before working many years at Bradford Marine in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Peter enjoyed a great love of the water and boats. In 1986 he was Rookie of the Year of the Florida Inboard Racing Club.
One of Peter's lifelong dreams was to build his own boat, and with the help of many friends and his wife, the lobster yacht Whatever was launched at Kittery Point in 1998. Peter was then able to achieve his next dream, making the trip from Maine to Florida by boat, and several trips thereafter.
Peter was a member of St. Andrew's Lodge 56 in Portsmouth, having recently received his 40-year pin. He was also an active member of the Antique Outboard Motor Club, attending many meets both in Maine and Florida.
Peter will be missed by many friends and especially his lifelong friend George Monyahan of Ossipee, N.H.
He was predeceased by his father, Alton "Nick" Beals.
Peter is survived by his mother, Annie Burke, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; his wife, Ellen Beals, of Manchester; his stepdaughter, Tammy Day, of Lexington, Ky.; his mother-in-law, Jeannette Oliver, of Bath; and his "adopted" grandparents, Mater and Pater Thrash, of Lake Worth, Fla.
A celebration of Peter's life will be held at a later date.
