Carleton E. Briggs Obituary (1927 - 2013)

AUGUSTA -- Carleton Edwin Briggs, 86, died on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at the VA Maine Healthcare Systems-Togus. He was born April 28, 1927, in Portland, the son of Bertha and Leo Briggs. Upon early graduation in December from Deering High School, Portland, he enlisted in the Navy and served during World War II. He met his wife, Glenda C. Dow, while attending Deering High School. They were married Nov. 8, 1946, and enjoyed 64 years of love and dedication to each prior to her death in 2010. Carleton was active in many Masonic Bodies in Augusta and was Master of Bethlehem Lodge #35 in 1976. Carleton retired from the Daily Kennebec Journal following many years of employment. Following retirement, Carleton and Glenda spent many years camping and especially enjoyed the camping trips to Baxter State Park with their children and grandchildren. Many special thanks to Dad's caregivers at the Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta and the Togus VA Hospice Unit. Carleton is survived by his sons, Darrell, and his wife, MaryBeth, of Augusta, and their children, Angela, Cadence, Keith and Luke, David and his wife, Karen, of Hallowell, and their children, Estelle, Colby, Hibby and Katie, and Douglas and his wife, Sarah, of Readfield, and their children, Jennifer Maverde and Samantha Philbrook; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Ellsworth Briggs, and his wife, Ann, of Maryland. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home,1 Church St., Augusta. A public Masonic funeral service will be at noon. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at South Side Cemetery, Pine Street, Skowhegan.
