Elwyn George Dinsmore Obituary (1928 - 2012)

AUGUSTA -- Elwyn George Dinsmore, 84, of Augusta, passed away peacefully, Friday, July 13, 2012. He was born in Princeton, Maine, Jan. 18, 1928, the son of Clifton and Marvel (Wentworth) Dinsmore. Elwyn served in the United States Army Band in Italy from 1946 to 1947. In 1951, he graduated from Maine Vocational Technical Institute and then served on the Augusta Police Department for 25 years from 1953 to 1978, retiring as a lieutenant. Upon retiring from the police department, he drove school bus for the city of Augusta for six years and then worked at Chinet Paper Co. in Waterville as a security guard for 22 years. Elwyn enjoyed many years of fishing and hunting down east at his camp in Jacksonville, Maine. He was a member of Penney Memorial United Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and on the Board of Trustees. Mr. Dinsmore married Jacqueline DeBlois in 1952. She passed away on Nov. 16, 1981. Elwyn is survived by his two daughters, Sheryl Dinsmore-Lee, and Gayle Gore and her husband, Raymond; three grandchildren, Jonathan and his wife, Melissa, Stephanie and David; three great-grandchildren, Tala, Lacey and Colby; along with his long-time companion of 30 years, Mary Cooper. Relatives and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, in Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Penney Memorial United Baptist Church, 393 Water St., Augusta, ME 04330 for scholarships to the China Lake Baptist Camp; or to the Thomas J. Landers Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 2431, South Portland, ME 04116 for law enforcement scholarships.
