Errie C. (McDougald) Hasty Obituary (1922 - 2014)

WINTHROP, ME ~ Errie M Hasty, 91, of Winthrop, ME died Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Heritage Living Center in Winthrop. Born in Keegan, ME. on June 19, 1922, the daughter of Joseph and Nina McDougald, she was a graduate of Kents Hill High School and Gates Business School in Augusta, ME. During World War II, Errie worked in Washington DC where she met her husband, James Hasty. After his discharge from the Army, they returned to Maine and she worked for the State in various administrative offices until Jim passed away in 1971. Errie married Dexter Bridges in 1976 and moved to Largo FL where she worked for the Dept of Veteran Affairs and became very involved with the Auxiliaries of VFW, DAV & American Legion, of which she was very proud. Errie was the President of the VFW Auxiliary for five years. Dexter passed away in 1994 and Errie retired from the DAV and moved to LaBelle, FL to manage the Big V Motel before moving back to her beloved Maine in 1997 to be close to her family. She became a member of the Penquis CAP Foster Grandparent Program, where she spent many satisfying hours with the students of MSAD #11 for five years before her health forced her retire. After that, she spent as much time as her health allowed volunteering with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Gardiner. Errie’s hope “was that she might have made a difference to some of those sweet children who gave her so much love”. Errie is predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Nina Kennedy McDougald of Readfield, ME; her husbands, James Hasty and Dexter Bridges; her brothers, Ernold McDougald of Portsmouth, VA; and Frank McDougald of Auburn ME and a daughter-in-law, Patricia Hasty (wife of Frank Hasty) of Grant, NM. She is survived by her sons: Bill Hasty and his wife, Sara of Gardiner; Frank Hasty of Grant, NM; Jim Hasty and his wife, Susan of Milton, FL; and her daughter, Cynthia Everetts of Aurora, CO. Survivors also include her very special sister and best friend, Velma Bellville of Winthrop, ME; a brother, Holson McDougald and his wife, Polly of Monmouth, ME. Errie is also survived by ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews located throughout the United States. We would like to thank the Staff of Heritage and the Kennebec Valley Hospice nurses for the wonderful care they have given to her. We are extremely grateful to the people at Heritage for the respect and love you gave her during her stay. Family and friends may call from 10 am – 11 am on Friday, January 24th at Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 62 Bowdoin St, Winthrop, ME with the funeral service immediately following visiting hours at 11:00. Spring burial will be in the Readfield Corner Cemetery.
