Halcyon (Whitten) Roberts Obituary (1922 - 2013)

AUGUSTA -- Halcyon (Whitten) Roberts, 91, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation at Graybirch. She was born in Augusta on May 10, 1922, the grand-niece of Gracie M. Whitten, who raised her. She graduated from Cony High School as valedictorian of the class of 1941. In July of that year, she started work in the accounting department of Central Maine Power Co. She retired as an accounting supervisor in 1984. She was a member of CMP Old Timers, served as president of CMP Women's Club and held offices in CAMRA for several years following retirement. Halcyon was a member of Green Street United Methodist Church, where she had served as a trustee and as the benevolence treasurer. She was also a member of the finance and missions committees, the administrative council, and the Susanna Wesley UMW Circle and the Pastor Parish committee. She had also been historian of Fitzgerald-Cummings American Legion Auxiliary and president of the Gardiner Art Club. She loved animals and was a member of P.A.L.S. She was interested in history and music and was a member of the Friends of Fort Western, Kennebec Historical Society, Augusta Symphony and Cecilia Club. She was predeceased by her aunt, Gracie M. Whitten; her parents, Ethel and Harold Blake; and her sister, Harolyn Buzzell. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Arthur Buzzell, of Randolph; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Visiting will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13 at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1 Church St., Augusta. A celebration of her life will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Green Street United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Wall Cemetery, Augusta.
