Janet P. Thorne Obituary (1919 - 2015)

SIDNEY ~ Janet P. Thorne, 95, of Sidney, died Wednesday March 11, 2015 at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta. Janet was born April 10, 1919 in Phillips, Maine to Cecile and Lizzie (Perry) Pierce. She was a graduate of Kent's Hill School, class of 1937. She married Charles Thorne (who retired as a major in the U.S. Army) on December 10th 1938. They had seven children: Edward, David, Lawrence, Robert, Carolyn, Karen, and Gary. Janet's interests included family, gardening and canning, 4-H involvement, playing scrabble and sewing. She was a personal seamstress for Governor John Reed's wife, Cora. She retired from the State of Maine as a nurse working at the A.M.H.I. facility. She enjoyed crocheting afghans and knitting mittens for her grandchildren and family members. Janet is survived by her sons: Edward and his wife Doris, David and his wife Deborah, Lawrence and his wife Nancy, Robert and his wife Kathy,and Gary and his wife Debra. She has 25 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, and 6 great- great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two daughters: Carolyn and Karen, a grandson: Scott, a great grandson: Trevor, and her sisters and brothers: Carl, Evelyn, Laura, Carroll, Dorothy, Gertrude, and Lawrence. The Thorne family wants to thank all the people from Company A at the Maine Veteran's Home for their kindness and care for Janet. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Scott Thorne Memorial Scholarship Fund, Town of Sidney, 2986 Middle Road, Sidney, ME 04330. A celebration of life for will be held May 2nd at the Calumet Club in Augusta from 1-4 pm. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, One Church Street, Augusta.
