Janice A. "Jane" Thorso Obituary (1922 - 2016)

AUGUSTA—Janice A. “Jane” Thorso, 93, of Augusta, died peacefully on Friday March 18, 2016 at the Ivan Calderwood Home on Vinalhaven. She was born July 5, 1922 the daughter of Lester and Edith (Cayford) Austin. Jane was a Registered Nurse, beginning her career in Boston. She married Knut Thorso, from Trondheim, Norway in 1948 and they eventually settled in Augusta where Jane worked at Augusta General Hospital. Later she worked at Pen Bay Hospital in Rockport and the last few years before her retirement were spent nursing at the Gardiner Rehabilitation Center. Jane enjoyed her dogs, gardening, recipe collecting and her many visits to Norway visiting family and taking pictures. Mrs. Thorso is survived by her daughter Wendy Pelletier and her husband Lee, of Hope; her son Kristian Thorso and his wife Bente, of Bjugn, Norway; her brother, Robert C. Austin and his partner Nancy Golden, of Burnt Hills, NY; six grandchildren-- Jeffrey Burgess and his wife Emily, of Hope; Katy Callahan and her husband Josh, of Rockland; Kristian Burgess and his wife Sarah, of Union; Jason Burgess and his wife Saralyn, of Union, Joel Burgess and his wife Sara, of Waldoboro and Julianne Bratz and her husband Einar, of Oslo, Norway; a niece, Bonnie Violet, of Limerick; and a nephew, Gary Austin and his partner Laurie, of Greenfield Center, NY. She also enjoyed spending time with her 20 great-grandchildren, her dear friends Lynn and Kevin Conger Sr. and their family: Karen and Brian Gilles, and Kevin Conger Jr.; and her friend W. Scott Smith. Relatives and friends may visit at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church Street, Augusta, Monday March 28 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. with a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Spring burial will be in the Maplewood Cemetery in Fairfield.
