Raymond H. Fontaine Obituary (1922 - 2011)

WINTHROP -- Raymond H. Fontaine, 88, of Highland Avenue, passed away quietly on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his family and friends. He was born in Winthrop on Aug. 19, 1922, the son of Ferdinand and Rosanna (Langevin) Fontaine. Ray graduated from Winthrop High School in 1941. While there, he played many sports and was voted 'Most Handsome' in his senior year. He served with the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, and after his discharge, he went to work for International Paper in Livermore. He later worked for Community Service Telephone in Winthrop as an installer until his retirement. On July 12, 1969, he married Jean Rhodenizer. Together they traveled the world, going to such places as England, Ireland and Colorado. They had many wonderful years together until her death in 2004. Ray enjoyed reading and golfing, but he especially enjoyed the family reunions that the Fontaines held for many years, where a great time was had by all. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Winthrop. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jean; a daughter, Carmen Persechini; his brothers Raoul, Alberic, Robert and Edgar; and a sister, Aurore Bouchard. He is survived by his son Raymond J. Fontaine and his wife, Mary, of Livermore Falls; a sister, Elaine Gould, of Winthrop; his sisters-in law Joan Fontaine of Winthrop and Julia Fontaine of Augusta; and a brother-in law, Richard Rhodenizer, and his wife, Velma, of New York; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Ray's caregivers, Darlene Ames and Donna Farrington, for the compassion and kindness given to Ray during his illness. Visiting will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 26 at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Glenside Cemetery, Winthrop.
