READFIELD ? Alice Townsend Couture, 92, of Readfield, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Nicholson's Nursing Home in Winthrop, where she had been for a short time. She spent nearly all her life in Readfield, but she had been a resident of St. Mark's Home for Women in Augusta, where she had happily spent the last 10 years. Alice was born in Readfield, Feb. 12, 1910, the daughter of Myrtle (Adell) and Ernest Linwood Townsend. She was a graduate of Winthrop High School and the University of Maine. She taught school for 34 years in Winthrop, Readfield and Augusta, retiring in 1970. Mrs. Couture was a member of the Kennebec Retired Teachers Association, the Maine State Retired Teachers Association and the National Retired Teachers Association. She attended Jesse Lee Memorial Church in East Readfield. She is survived by two sisters, Ruth Townsend and Marion Townsend, of Readfield, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Cleo T. Couture of Readfield; an infant son, John Thomas; a brother, Eben Lee of Winthrop; and a sister, Mary Townsend Hock of Readfield. At Mrs. Couture's request, there will be no visiting hours, and a private interment service will be held on July 16.
