WAYNE - Arline Rebecca Andrews Lovejoy passed on to her Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004. She was the youngest daughter of John Leslie and Lillie Rebecca Williams Andrews of Winthrop. She was born on May 14, 1915, in Bradford, N.H. She was married to Harold Augustus Lovejoy on July 18, 1947, and he predeceased her in 1989. Her brother, John Kenneth Andrews; sister Evelyn Mary Andrews Arbo; and her nephew, Avon Leo Arbo Jr., also predeceased her. Arline Lovejoy was very active in her community. She attended Winthrop and Wayne Methodist churches and was brought up in the Advent Christian Church. She graduated from Proctor Academy, Andover, N.H., in 1932 and from Aurora College in Aurora, Ill., in 1941. She took a variety of graduate courses from the University of Maine system. She worked and ran Andrews Market in Winthrop from 1932 to 1968. She was the state president of BPW in 1976, an active member since 1941 -- more than 50 years -- and was the local chapter's president, vice president, secretary and treasurer over the years, as well as president of the New England BPW past state presidents in 1981, and chaired the State BPW Scholarship Committee for many years. She taught at Monmouth Academy from 1968 to 1981. There, she had a sophomore homeroom; and was an English teacher for the seventh, eighth, ninth and 10 grades, NHS adviser and cheerleading coach. She was a founding member of CODA Chorus in 1966, 38 seasons ago, and was its secretary, treasurer and advertising chair for many years. She sang in church choirs for more than 50 years; taught Sunday school at the Methodist Church in Winthrop from 1932 to 1952; was treasurer of the 30 Mile River Snowmobile Club for many years; president of the Kennebec Retired Teachers Association for two years, and member since 1981; a member of the Reading Club in Wayne; on the Winthrop Town Budget Committee; and a founding member of the Winthrop Area Development Association, which helped develop businesses in Winthrop. She also developed a recreation program and encouraged businesses to come to Winthrop, holding positions of secretary and treasurer; she was the chairman of Winthrop's Bicentennial celebration in 1971, which gained cooperation and support of the people and organizations in Winthrop and produced a history of Winthrop; and she wrote a family history titled 'Faith's Heritage,' in 1986. She was very supportive of sports teams from local schools and would attend many games. She attended most of the state basketball tourney games in Augusta for many seasons. She leaves her sisters, Jean Elizabeth Andrews Ardell of Flagler Beach, Fla., and Windham, and Marian Bertha Andrews Hinkley of Green Valley, Ariz., and Falmouth. She also leaves her children, Harold Augustus Lovejoy Jr. of Wayne and Sally Lovejoy Bates of Lewiston. She leaves grandchildren Dorothy Geneva Lovejoy Guild of Auburn, Rebecca Ann Bates Genest of Brewer and Gary Merle Bates of Wayne. She leaves great-grandchildren Ashleigh Guild, Ryan Riley, Morgan Riley, Patrick Bates, Christopher Bates and Stephen Bates. Finally, she leaves nieces and nephews Maralie Arbo Yoder of Elkhart, Ind., David Andrews of Sedona, Ariz., George Andrews of Cottonwood, Ariz., Sandra Andrews Stapleton of Chesapeake, Va., Judy Andrews Hughes of Pembroke, Ga., Pamela Ardell Levere of Kennebunk, John Ardell of Falmouth, Beth Ardell Nicholson of Seattle, Wash., James Ardell of Flagler Beach, Edward Hinkley of Augusta, Susan Hinkley Goldberg of Green Valley; and grandnieces and nephews James Hinkley, Christiana Hinkley Deliberto, Randall Levere and Heather Levere Harris, Jonas and Colby Nicholson, Jennifer Andrews Beard and Lee and Eric Arbo. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Arline's life at 10 a.m. Monday at Wayne Community Church. A committal service will be held in the spring at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Wayne.
