WINTHROP - Barbara L. Smiley, 89, of Winthrop and formerly of the Augusta- Gardiner- Randolph area for most of her life, went to be with her loving husband on Monday, April 2nd, 2007 at Heritage Rehab & Living Center in Winthrop. She was born in Bath on May 1st, 1917, the daughter of Neil W. Cunningham Sr. and Ida (Dickinson) Cunningham. Barbara was educated in Gardiner and Randolph area schools. Her mother meant the world to her and, since Barbara was a young girl, she loved and cared for her mother until the day her mother passed. After her passing, on June 21st, 1952, she married Robert Smiley and they had 50 wonderful years together until his death in 2002. A homemaker for most of her life, Barbara loved animals, especially birds, and at times had parakeets and parrots as her pets. She also enjoyed braiding rugs and picking berries. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Neil W. Cunningham, Jr. She is survived by a brother, Damon Cunningham, Sr. & his wife, Jane, of Hallowell; a sister-in-law, Katherine Cunningham of Hallowell; one niece and six nephews, Sharon Proctor of Wiscasset, Damon Cunningham, Jr. of Augusta, Fred Cunningham of Chelsea, Bruce Cunningham of Winthrop, and Jeffrey and David Cunningham, both of West Gardiner. Barbara?s relatives and friends are invited to visit from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5th at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, One Church St., Augusta where a celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Burial will be later in the spring at Mount Hope Cemetery, Augusta.
