AUGUSTA ? Beryle N. Martens, 86, went to be with her late husband, Carl, on Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta. She was born in Augusta on March 14, 1917, the daughter of Frank and Florence (Wood) Douglass. Mrs. Martens graduated from Cony High School. She was a homemaker for most of her life and worked as a short-order cook over the years. She followed the Boston Red Sox, professional wrestling, and was very much a people person. She enjoyed country-western music and her monthly beano parties on the street. Most of all, Beryle loved playing cards and spending time with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was also a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of American Legion, Alfred W. Maxwell Jr. Post No. 40 in Winthrop. Mrs. Martens was predeceased by her husband, Frederick Carl Martens, her brother, Norman Douglass, and a sister, Virginia Bearor. She is survived by three daughters, Judith Farris and her friend, Phil, of Gardiner, Joyce Follensbee and her husband, Burt, of Burnham, and Carla Hallett and her husband, Lloyd, of Readfield; two sisters, Phyllis Betit of Old Orchard Beach and Joyce Martens and her husband, Marvin, of Manchester; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and her closest friends, Muriel and Mrs. Dube. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held at noon on Friday. Following the service, committal prayers will be offered at 1 p.m. in the Father LeClair Memorial Chapel at the old Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta, where Mrs. Martens will lie to rest next to her husband. www.khrfuneralhomes.com
