READFIELD - Borghild 'Bubs' Stokes, 96, of Readfield died peacefully at her daughter's home on Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, with her devoted husband and daughter by her side. She was born Feb. 7, 1912, in Lake Thelma, Alberta, the daughter of Kristian Wilhelm and Anna Margrethe (Hovdenak) Tanner. Bubs spent her early childhood in Canada, moving to Seattle when she was about 12 years old. She married her husband, John W. 'Jack' Stokes, in Seattle and they lived in Seattle and then Edmonds all of their lives until moving to Readfield, to live with their daughter and son-in-law in July 2007. She was a passionate writer of stories, and was in the process of writing a historical novel about a Norwegian immigrant family, 'Forgotten Tomorrows.' She spent many years enjoying boating and flying with her husband. She was predeceased by her son, John W. 'Jack' Stokes Jr.; two sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, John W. 'Jack' Stokes Sr., her daughter, Karen Deckelman and her husband, Rocky Paradis, all of Readfield; three grandsons, two stepgranddaughters and three great-granddaughters; and many relatives in Washington and Oregon. A private celebration of her life will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to HealthReach Hospice and Volunteers of Kennebec Valley, P.O.
