AUGUSTA - Constance Niles Boggs died peacefully at the Maine Veterans' Home on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 87 years old. She was born on Sept. 7, 1921, in Augusta, the first child of Walter Leland Niles and Mary Goodwin Niles. She attended local elementary schools in the Augusta area and graduated from Cony High School in 1941. After the outbreak of World War II, Connie started nursing school at Augusta General Hospital -- now MaineGeneral Medical Center -- and became a registered nurse and an Army cadet nurse. In 1951, she began work at Statler Tissue, managing the first-aid room, from which she retired in 1985. She and her husband, Bob, were married in May 1953 and settled on the corner of Lamson Road and North Belfast Avenue, which was her home at the time of her death. Connie was active in the Augusta General Hospital Nurses Alumni Association, serving as president and secretary, and was a member of the Penney Memorial United Baptist Church. She enjoyed flower gardening, house plants and keeping records of her family history in photo albums and scrapbooks. As a ninth-generation Mainer, genealogy was important to her. Her biggest pleasure was in being a mom to her four children, putting each through college and watching them grow into adulthood and spending time with them, especially at camp on 3 Cornered Pond. She liked to travel and visited Hawaii, Aruba, Barbados, Europe and sites throughout the United States. She accompanied Bob to 17 different reunions of the 87th Infantry Division, in which he fought during World War II. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Robert Boggs, of Lamson Road, Augusta; a brother, Norman Niles, of Weeks Mills; two daughters, Lynda Anderson Anderson, of Durham, N.C., and Sally Boggs Gilbert, of Waterville, and two sons, Jack Anderson, of Woodstock, Vt., and Robert Boggs Jr., of Bridgton. She is also survived by son-in-law John Gilbert, of Waterville; daughters-in-law Dee Anderson, of Woodstock, and Sally Driscoll Boggs, of Bridgton; three grandchildren, Bethanie Anderson, of Bryn Mawr, Pa., Mary Anderson, of Durham, and Bobby Anderson, of Banda Aceh Province, Indonesia; one great-grandchild, Larry B. Stevens, of Durham; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Stanley Niles, Donald Niles, Kenneth Niles and Leland Niles; and her sister, Eleanor Niles Barney. Visiting will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. A celebration of life will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Penney Memorial United Baptist Church, with the Rev. Eric Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
