KANNAPOLIS, NC. ~ Daniel Scott Hewins, Jr., 83, formerly of Augusta, died Wednesday December 31, 2014 in Salisbury, North Carolina. He was born in Newton, Massachusetts, April 27, 1931 the son of Daniel S. Sr. and Mary (McNeil) Hewins. He was brought to Augusta and was raised by his grandparents Scott and Flora Hewins. Dan was a 1948 graduate of Cony High School, joining the U.S. Navy shortly after. He retired from the Navy after 29 years of service in 1977 with the rank of Chief Aerographer. In his retirement, Dan was a sports official in Augusta for many years, volunteered at the Augusta Area Food Bank and Soup Kitchen and was an active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, a friend of Fort Western, was an avid Red Sox fan. Dan was also a loyal friend who was always there for others. Dan is survived by his daughter, Aida “CeCe” Miller, of Kannapolis, NC and a grandson, Denver Whysong, of Keller Texas. Funeral services and burial with military honors will be held in the spring. Burial will occur at Forest Grove Cemetery in Augusta.
