EAST WINTHROP - David Austin Bourne of East Winthrop died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at the Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg, Va. David was born in Newton, Mass., on May 30, 1938, the son of Earl Burgess and Catherine Chandler Bourne. He graduated from Newton High School in 1956 and the University of Massachusetts in 1965, with a bachelor's degree in accounting. He served four years in the Air Force, stationed at Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts and overseas at Torrejon Air Base, Spain. David worked for several years in hospital finance. He began his career in Manchester, Conn. He then worked at Children's Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. In 1981, he and his family moved from Wellesley, Mass., to East Winthrop. He continued working in hospital financial administration until 1987, when Governor John McKernan appointed him state controller. He was proud to serve in that position for two terms. He was a dedicated member and moderator of the Manchester Community Church. He also served on the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees. Dave met his wife, Sue Blood, at the University of Massachusetts, and they married in 1964. He is survived by her and three children: Catherine Bourne Carver of Harpswell, Rebecca Bourne Gove and her husband, Steve, of Blacksburg, Va., and William Burgess Bourne and his wife, Stacy, of Winthrop; by grandchildren Caitlin and Payton Carver of Harpswell, Meredith and Burgess Gove of Blacksburg, and Bradley and Samuel Bourne of Winthrop; by sister, Joanne Bauckman, and her husband, Theodore, of Bourne, Mass.; by sister-in-law Nancy Bates of Dover, Mass.; and by several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Manchester Community Church in Manchester, with the Rev. Ernest B. Johnson Jr. officiating. Interment will be private.
