Obituary

SIDNEY - Dora M. Sheldon, 87, of Belgrade Road died on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Bingham on Dec. 13, 1917, the daughter of Philias and Rose (Cormier) Casey. Dora attended Monson Academy and, in 1944, she entered the Navy. She was sent to the Cooks and Bakers School at the U.S. Naval Training School at Hunter College in New York. She later served with the WAVES in Pearl Harbor until her discharge in 1946. On June 28, 1956, she married Charles Sheldon in Stephentown, N.Y. She had been a resident of Cornville since 1939, living on East Ridge Road. She worked at Med-Wed shoe in Skowhegan for a while, and later worked at the Maine State Museum as assistant registrar until her retirement in 1982. Dora loved nature, animals and trees. She worked diligently with the American Chestnut Society and, for a while, had the largest producing tree in Maine. She was a lifelong member of American Legion Post 205, Augusta; John F. McPherson Chapter 1 D.A.V., Augusta; and the Kennebec Valley Humane Society. She was a charter member of the WAVES National (Maine Unit) NO. 41WN, and member of the Maine State Association of Retirees. Dora also did volunteer work at the Maine Veterans' Home. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, in 1966; a sister, Lodie Darmstadt; and a brother, Regis 'Ray' Casey. She is survived by sisters Norma Jamros of Cheshire, Mass., Hazel St. Hilaire of Palmetto, Fla., Emily Barnett of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Leah Tracy of Cheshire; brothers Norris Casey of Antioch, Calif., and E. Otis Casey of Dover Plains, N.Y.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and her beloved dog and companion, Casey. A graveside service will be held at a later date and time in East Ridge Cemetery, Cornville. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to: Monson Historical Society Museum, c/o Estella Bennett, Box 173, Guilford, ME 04443, for a display case for military memorabilia to be dedicated in her name; or to: American Legion Post 205, Relief Fund, 396 Eastern Ave., Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta.
