AUGUSTA - Dorothy L. Allen, 88, of Augusta, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011 at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. She was born in Richmond on Aug. 28, 1922, the daughter of Donald and Minnie (Bickford) McKenna. Dorothy grew up in Gardiner and graduated from Gardiner High School. She went on to graduate from Boston University. She returned to Maine and married Royce Allen on March 16, 1946. They shared 54 years of marriage until his death in 2000. Dorothy worked for many years as a social worker for the state of Maine. After retiring, she and Royce traveled to Florida, and she continued this for several years after his death. Mrs. Allen enjoyed gardening, reading books, and feeding birds. She was a fan of the New York Yankees. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband; her brother, Leroy McKenna; and her sister, Margaret Terry. She is survived by her son, Stephen Allen, and his wife, Diane, of Winthrop; her daughters, Susan Allen, of Chelsea, and Carol Moore and her husband, Stan, of Augusta; seven grandchildren, Michael Bowman, Jennifer Vanderleest, Michele Bowman, Brian Allen, Jason Allen, Benjamin and Matthew Moore; and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Mitch Vanderleest. A memorial service will be held at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, Tuesday, February 1 at 11:00 a.m. burial will be at the old Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
