WINTHROP - Dorothy M. Birkbeck, 85, of Winthrop, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at her home. She was born in Springfield, Mass., on June 5, 1923, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Dubois) Carron. She grew up in Springfield, later moving to Enfield, Conn. Dot worked at the Springfield Armory and later at Pratt and Whitney. She also worked as a waitress at several restaurants. She married Lawrence Birkbeck Sr. and, together, they moved to Maine in the early 1960s and purchased the Belvedere Resort in Winthrop. They operated the resort until well into the 1990s. Lawrence died in 1996. Dorothy enjoyed bird watching and loved dogs. She was known for making every effort to keep the squirrels out of her bird feeders. Mrs. Birkbeck is survived by a stepson, Lawrence Birkbeck Jr. and his wife, Lorraine, of Plainville, Mass.; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Fleming and her husband, Richard, of Foxboro, Mass.; her grandchildren, Patrick Fleming, Lori Linck and her husband, Rich, Kathleen Baillie and her husband, Rob, Kenny Fleming, Brenda Fleming, Larry, Mathew, and Barbara Birkbeck; along with seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and several lifelong friends in Connecticut. A funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., in Winthrop. Burial will follow at Glenside Cemetery.
