WEST GARDINER - Elizabeth 'Betty' Mildred Freeman, 73, died on Friday, May 21, 2004, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge in Augusta. She was born in Augusta on May 22, 1930, the daughter of Clyde Clifton and Mildred (Arno) Cunningham. Betty attended Augusta and Belgrade schools and married Richard E. Freeman on July 25, 1952. She was employed for a number of years at Hallowell Shoe, where she was very capable in her craft as a cobbler. One of her proudest moments was her accomplishment in 1977 when, after two years of night school, Betty received her diploma from Gardiner Area High School. She was a very outspoken woman but seemed to get along with everyone. Even after her time at Hallowell Shoe, she was very involved with craft work. She enjoyed making quilts, snowmobile mittens, ice-fishing gloves and pretty much anything that anyone would need for any given event. She also liked to read, do crossword puzzles and share time having tea with her good friend, Pat Piper, who also shared her love for craft work. Betty always planned ahead and was prepared for everything in providing for her family and friends, and she will be missed more than words can say. Betty was predeceased by her two brothers, Charles Raynes and Kenneth Josselyn; and a daughter-in-law, Lynda Freeman. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Richard E. Freeman Sr., of West Gardiner; her two sons, Richard E. Freeman Jr. of Farmingdale and Michael E. Freeman Sr. of West Gardiner; two sisters-in-law, Edna Josselyn of Ellsworth and Hazel Raynes of East Winthrop; a niece, Patricia Larrabee and her husband, Harry, of Ellsworth; a cousin, Mildred Wyman of Dexter; and two grandchildren, Michael E. Freeman Jr. and Jennifer Lynn White, both of West Gardiner. Relatives and friends are invited to visit 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, where a celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 26. Later this week, burial will be at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
