PORTLAND ? Emma Mary McCatherin, 86, of 75 State St., passed away early Wednesday morning, May 29, 2002, at Maine Medical Center. She was born in Rumford, Nov. 23, 1915, the daughter of Peter and Isabelle LeBlanc Gaudin, and was brought up in Mexico, where she graduated from local schools. In 1936, she married D. Stewart McCatherin of Portland. In 1945, she and her family moved to Augusta, which was her home for the next 29 years. She lived in Spruce Head from 1974 to 1999, when she moved to 75 State St. Mrs. McCatherin was a homemaker and raised five children. She was active for about 35 years in the dance studio businesses operated by her three daughters. She also worked for the American Optical Company, the Maine Department of Motor Vehicles and for Dr. William Coppolla, a Rockland optometrist. Mrs. McCatherin was predeceased by her husband in 1966; her brothers, Arthur and William Gaudin; and a sister, Bridget Pariseau, all of Mexico, and by her dear friend, Jim Snow of Spruce Head. She is survived by her sister, Madeline Crawford of Creighton, Mo.; her daughters and their husbands, Jean and Jim McDonald of Coral Gables, Fla.; Carol and Neil Martin of Worcester, Mass.; and Keltie and Joseph Collins of Farmingdale; two sons, John of Carrabassett Valley, and Charles of Palm Springs, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, May 31, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. Visiting hours are 6-8 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday. Internment will be in the Forest Grove Cemetery immediately following the service.
