Ernestine D. Ohler Obituary (1918 - 2017)

AUGUSTA - Ernestine D. Ohler, 98, died Sunday August 20, 2017 at the Maine Veterans Home. She was born in Livermore Falls, Maine, November 25, 1918 the daughter of Joseph Ernest “Pete” and Laura (Ouellette) Dumais. She graduated from Livermore Falls High School in 1936 at the top of her class. She went on to the St. Mary’s School of Nursing, graduating in 1939. Ernestine went to work at Yale New Haven Hospital until 1945. Then, she entered the Army Medical Corps as a Second Lieutenant, stationed in San Diego, until 1947. She transferred to the Veterans Hospital in Newington Connecticut and then to Togus V.A. Hospital in Augusta, where she retired as a Nurse Supervisor. While at Togus, she met and married the recently widowed, Dr. Robert Ohler in 1972. They made their home in Winthrop for a number of years. After his death in 2002, Ernestine moved to Granite Hill Estates. Mrs. Ohler enjoyed doing needlepoint, reading and bird watching until the loss of her sight. Ernestine is survived by her stepchildren, Jeffrey Ohler and his wife, Patricia, of Tenants Harbor and Priscilla Penny Markley and her husband, Reed, of Winthrop; her sister, Camille Brown and her husband, James, of Rio Rancho, NM along with several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Winthrop on Thursday August 24, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at a later date at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Livermore Falls.
