PORTLAND - Evelyn Rebecca Buck, 94, of St. Joseph's Manor died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She was born in North Searsmont on Jan. 11, 1913, the daughter of George L. and Margie Poland Jackson. She was a graduate of Crosby High School in Belfast. She worked for Liberty & Belfast Telephone Co., where she met her husband, Russell Buck, who died in 1981. During World War II, Evelyn worked for Mr. E. M. Houdlette in his pharmacy and postal substation. In later years, she worked at the family-owned business, Buck Brothers Market. She was a member of Green Street United Methodist Church, served on the administrative board, was chairperson of the coffee hour and also served on the communications and worship committees. She also was a member of the UMW and served as secretary of the Sylvester Parker Circle. Mrs. Buck was a member of the Riverside Extension and served as chairman. She is survived by three brothers, Bernard L., of Rockland, Roland L., of Bangor, and Roger A., of North Searsmont; her son-in-law, Henry Lerette, of Farmingdale; one granddaughter, Karen Lerette Bell, of Stratham, N.H., and three great-granddaughters, Kimberly Gagnon, Melissa Gagnon and her fianc?, Gregory Emmons, and Erica Hunter and her husband, Tom; along with many nieces and nephews. A daughter, Janet, predeceased her in 1973. Friends may donate in her memory to the charity of their choice. Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1 Church St., Augusta, with a celebration of life to be held at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Thomas Blackstone, pastor of Green Street United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Augusta, in the spring.
