AUGUSTA - Evelyn Dorothy 'Nana' Sharpe, 86, of Augusta and Hershey, Pa., died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. She was born in Crawford on Nov. 26, 1917, the daughter of Frank and Lula (Thistlewood) Magoon. Evelyn graduated from Calais Academy, and it was there that she met her future husband, Philip R. Sharpe. They were married in Calais on Jan. 8, 1938, by the Rev. Chester B. Oliver, and were blessed by having the opportunity to celebrate 60 happy years together before Mr. Sharpe's passing on Sept. 6, 1998. Evelyn was a homemaker for most of her life. She was also employed as department manager in several stores in the Bangor and Waterville areas in the 1950s and 1960s, retiring from the Maine Department of Taxation in the 1970s. She was a member of Penney Memorial United Baptist Church in Augusta and attended Church Hill Baptist Church in Augusta and Evangelical Free Church in Hershey. She was also a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the VFW post in Augusta and the Order of the Eastern Star in North Anson. She cared for many children throughout her life at her home and volunteered with child care at churches she previously attended. She enjoyed knitting and was an avid reader of her Bible and Christian novels. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends, all of whom will miss her dearly. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Philip; two brothers, Robert and Ulric Magoon; and her son-in-law, Glenn Prescott Jr. She is survived by her son, Frank Rodman Sharpe and his wife, Jean, of Naples, Fla.; her daughter, Betty Prescott, of Augusta and Hershey; her sister, Calla Greenlaw and her husband, Gordon, of Eastport; her sister-in-law, Dorothy M. Sharpe, of Palm Coast, Fla.; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Gregory Sharpe and his wife, Karen, and their daughters Moriah and Emily, of Charlotte, N.C., Douglas Sharpe of Naples, Fla., Jason Sharpe and his wife, Heidi, and their daughter Kennedy, of Hampden, Amanda Moore and her husband, Greg, of Charlotte, and Lori Grant and her husband, Devon, and their son Devon Roger, of Hershey; and she was very much loved by several nieces, nephews, stepgrandchildren and step great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 22, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. A celebration of Mrs. Sharpe's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 23, at Church Hill Baptist Church, Church Hill Road, Augusta, with the Rev. James Wiley and Evelyn's stepgrandson, the Rev. Dr. Glenn C. Prescott III, officiating. Following the service, committal prayers and interment will be held at noon in the Father LeClair Memorial Chapel at Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
