MOUNT VERNON - Everett J. Wadleigh, 86, died Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice in Auburn. He was born in Mt.Vernon on November 25, 1920, the son of Manford Guy and Minella Elvira (Damren) Wadleigh. A 1938 graduate of Belgrade High School, Everett proudly served his Country from 1942 ? 1946 in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as a crew chief and aerial engineer on B-24 and B-29 bombers. He had tours of duty in Calcutta, India and China. Also during his time of service, Everett married Lucille Safford in Liberal, Kansas on July 4, 1944. Upon his discharge in 1946, he returned to Mt. Vernon and, along with his father and brother, built his home on North Road. He lived all his life in Mt. Vernon, except for his service in the Air Corps. He worked for his brother-in-law and sister, Ray and Mildred Hall, on their dairy farm for 36 years. He also worked for a short time at Inmont, Corp. in Winthrop. He enjoyed a special friendship and working relationship with his friend, Ron Herrick. Everett was a great mechanic, and he would always come up with a solution to fix machinery if parts weren?t readily available. He enjoyed carpentry, doing odd jobs around the house, making lawn ornaments, and creating wooden toy rifles out of old broomsticks and odds and ends of material for his four great grandsons. He liked to go hunting and fishing and loved telling everyone the story of getting the big buck which was featured in the 1985 edition of Maine Antler and Skull Trophy Club Magazine. His other interests included gardening, going to dances, playing cards and telling stories. If anyone needed a ?perm?, just listening to one of his off-color tales would curl their hair or give them a bellyache from laughing. He loved his family and friends and will be missed a great deal. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, aides, and everyone who assisted in Everett?s care over the past several months. Everett was predeceased by his parents, his son, Jon Safford Wadleigh, and his two brothers, Ernest and Ervin Wadleigh. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lucille Wadleigh, of Mt. Vernon; his daughter, Lynn Mace & her husband, Bill, of Readfield; his sister, Mildred Hall of Mt. Vernon and his sister & brother-in-law, Marilyn Bean & her husband, Harold, of Vienna; his four grandchildren, Gregory Lindholm & Sheri and his children, Hayley and Taylor, all of Readfield, Scott Lindholm of Readfield, Jill (Lindholm) Worster & her husband, Darrell, and their children, Bradley, Troy, Ryan, and Timothy, all of Mt. Vernon, and Damon Wadleigh; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends and relatives are invited to visit from Noon ? 1:00 pm on Monday, Oct. 1st at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop where a celebration of Everett?s life will follow at 1:00 pm. Interment with full military honors will be held graveside at 10:00 am on Tuesday at the OLD Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Civic Center Dr., Augusta.
