Obituary

AUGUSTA - Frances G. West, 80, of Court Street Place died Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Graybirch, after a brief illness. She was born in Augusta on Oct. 17, 1923, the daughter of Herbert and Emily (Burbank) Goodwin. Raised by her grandmother, Edith Burbank, Frances graduated from Cony High School in 1941 and from Gates Business College in 1942. She attended South Parish Congregational Church in Augusta and had worked at the Office of Price Administration as a secretary. She met her husband, George, while working there and was married on June 22, 1946. A longtime member of the Augusta Country Club, she enjoyed golfing and spending summers at her camp at Welch's Point on Lake Cobbossee. She was a member of the Maine Association of Retirees and had done volunteer work at MaineGeneral Medical Center. Frances was a loving and caring person who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, George West, in 1976; a longtime companion, Henry Trial Sr., in 2000; and her adoptive parents, Arthur and Belle Savage. She is survived by a daughter, Betty West and her companion, Richard Joseph, of Augusta; and cousins Deanna Hallett of Hallowell and John Stevens of Island Falls. She is also survived by her extended family, Gail Leavitt of Augusta; Diane Boucher of Gardiner; Greg Trask of Augusta; and many friends. Visiting will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Bruce Forbes, pastor of South Parish Congregational Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Forest Grove Cemetery, Augusta.
