Gerry
Goold
Nov 22, 1937 — Jul 10, 2012
WINTHROP -- Gerry Goold, 74, of Winthrop, died Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at Central Maine Medical Center after a courageous battle with heart and kidney disease. Gerry was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., Nov. 22, 1937, the son of Gilbert and Margaret (Prather) Goold. He graduated from Hobart College with a bachelor of arts degree and from the University of Vermont with a master's degree in education administration. He worked for a number of years as the director of continuing medical education at the University of Vermont and moved to Maine to be the medical care development continuing education coordinator (Augusta). He recently retired from the University of Maine Book Store. Mr. Goold served as task force co-chairman for the Winthrop Alcohol and Drug Abuse Committee, director of both the UMA Over 30 Softball League and the Winthrop Over 30 Softball League, was board certified as a referee/umpire in softball, basketball, football and lacrosse, and was secretary/treasurer of MLOA and secretary/treasurer of Maine Intermediate Lacrosse League. Gerry was a true lover of all things sporting. When he wasn't playing a sport, he was officiating, coaching, recruiting or just being a fan. The annual championship trophy in the Over 40 Softball League in Augusta is entitled the Gerry Goold Award. He was also a great friend to all he met. Gerry had a way of making you feel like you were the most important person in the room. He was a great organizer and took the time to organize a reunion for his high school class from Bronxville, N.Y., that has carried on to this day with reunions being held yearly all over the country. He loved spending time in the water, especially Maranacook Lake. He always noted when he took his first swim of the year ... and his last. Gerry was dedicated to the UMA Book Store and the staff. He viewed his coworkers and friends as a wonderful family. Mr. Goold is survived by his wife, Jan Goold; his children, Jacqueline Hampton, and her husband, Eric, and their son, Nathan, of St. Cloud, Minn., Jerrett Goold and his wife, Debi, of Westbrook, and Garrick Goold and his wife, Heidi, and their children, Gavin and Tara Jayn, of Pewaukee, Wis. A memorial celebration gathering in Gerry's honor will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Gerry's name to the National Kidney Foundation , 30 East 33rd St., New York, NY 10016; or the Maine Lacrosse Officials Association, 81 Winnocks Road, Scarborough, ME 04074.
