Obituary

AUGUSTA - Harold R. Peabody, 82, of Riverside Drive died on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at his home. He was born in Augusta on Jan. 18, 1922, the son of Eben and Eva (Harris) Peabody. Harold graduated from Cony High School in 1940 and had worked on the family dairy farm, delivering milk door to door in Augusta until the late 1950s. He owned his own construction business and also grew vegetables that he sold at a roadside stand. For many years, he drove bus for KVCAP and Sawtelle's bus service. Harold owned and operated Peabody's Repair in Augusta since 1971. One of his passions was restoring and driving antique Allis-Chalmers tractors. He loved to take them to shows and parades. He was a founding member and the first president of the Maine Antique Tractor Club. He was also a member of the Maine Antique Power Association and the Riverside Congregational Church, Vassalboro. Harold enjoyed working in his vegetable garden, and people would often stop by to admire it. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Nancy Peabody of Augusta; a daughter, Gail Quimby and her husband, Charles, of Albion; a son, Alden Peabody of Augusta; a brother, Eben Peabody Jr. of Farmingdale; five grandchildren, Lawrence, Zachary, Chelsea, Eben and Marsha Quimby, all of Albion; and several cousins. There will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Aug. 31, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Augusta, with the Rev. Lawrence Merckens, pastor of the Riverside Congregational Church, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to MaineGeneral Health, Office of Philanthropy, 30 Chase Ave., Waterville 04901 (for the Medical Oncology Department in Augusta); or to Riverside Congregational Church, c/o Joseph Dee, 30 Hayford St., Farmingdale 04344.
