EAST WINTHROP- Harry Sawyer Brennan, 75, died late Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. Harry was born in Calais on Jan. 13, 1928, the son of Walter K. and Jennie (Sawyer) Brennan. He resided in Augusta for many years, graduating in 1946 from Cony High School, where he played baseball as a pitcher and center fielder and was captain of the team his junior and senior years. Also in that year, he was selected by the Boston Braves as the starting right fielder on the New England All-Star team, playing at Brave's field. Following graduation, he spent two years in the Army, with basic training obtained at Fort Jackson, S.C., and later assigned to Fort Dix, N.J., where he also played baseball. One of his most enjoyable memories was playing ball for Barry's Nine, a team largely made up of the Cony team and other talented ball players from the Augusta area. It was a fun team, playing any one, any where! The team hired a school bus to travel to Boston to see Harry play in the All-Star game - a gesture he appreciated and talked about for many years. On Aug. 27, 1949, he married Doris Paquin of Augusta. In 1952, he graduated with a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maine, Orono, where he was a member of the Phi Mu Delta fraternity. Harry worked for the Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in Boston as a bodily injury insurance claims investigator for three years. In 1955, he returned to Augusta to do similar work for the Hartford Accident & Indemnity Co. In 1959, he founded the Brennan Insurance Agency in Winthrop, and subsequently moved to Augusta, where he sold all lines of Insurance for 15 years. In 1971, he became an officer of Welcome Aboard travel agency in Augusta, where later he became president and was joined by his wife, Doris; and sons Walter and James, creating a family business for nearly 30 years. From 1975 to 1979, in memory of his uncle, the late Don Brennan, major league pitcher and member of the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame, Harry and his two sons started the Augusta Baseball School at Capitol Park, on Don Brennan Field. They taught the sport to players ages 8-15, an experience he and his sons thoroughly enjoyed. In addition to his love for baseball, Harry enjoyed sailing, canoeing, golf, tennis, hunting and fishing. Harry was a former member of the Independent Insurance Agents of Maine, serving on the legislative committee; and also a member of the Independent Mutual Agents of New England. He was a charter member of the Natural Resources Council of Maine; a member of the Maine Audubon Society, the Maine Nature Conservancy and the Augusta Kiwanis Club; a life member of the Augusta Lodge of Elks, Sportsman's Alliance of Maine and the National Rifle Association. He had been a Registered Maine Guide since 1946 and a member of the Augusta Country Club for 48 years. During the summers of 1990-1992, Harry joined the Serve Maine Program, as a volunteer for the Department of Conservation, Bureau of Public Lands, monitoring several lakes and ponds in the Rangeley region for boaters' use by Maine residents and nonresidents. Harry was predeceased by his son, Walter J. Brennan; and his cousin, Barbara Brennan. He is survived by his wife, Doris, of East Winthrop, to whom he was married for 54 years; his son, James Donald Brennan, of Augusta; two grandchildren, Tara and Garrett, of Augusta; two cousins, Donna Grant and Eileen Chamberland; and many nieces and nephews. By request, there will be no visiting hours. A celebration of Harry's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at South Parish Congregational Church, 9 Church St., Augusta. Burial will be held at a later date in Oak Grave Cemetery, Bath. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Harry's memory may be made to the Pine Tree Society for Crippled Children and Adults, P.O.
