WHITEFIELD - James Herbert Capper Jr., 64, died at his home in Whitefield on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, after a long battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Gwenda (Newton) Capper since 1964, and the loving father of Angela Harvey and April Capper. Jim was born in East St. Louis, Ill., on March 20, 1945, the son of James Herbert Sr. and Lena (Cornman) Capper. He grew up in Cahokia, Ill., and attended Cahokia High School. During his service in the Navy from 1962 to 1970, Jim married Gwenda Newton, in Dupo, Ill., on Sept. 8, 1964. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Jim and his family returned to Illinois, where he enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and the neighborhood children. He opened his heart and his home to many and was always available to lend a hand, whether it was assisting a neighbor, family member or friend, or being involved at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Cahokia. Jim was employed for 25 years with Union Pacific Railroad in St. Louis before relocating with his family to Maine in 1995. He also worked at Wheeler's Appliance and Geiger Brothers. Jim was a dedicated, loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He cherished the time he spent with his family. He always brought a touch of humor to every situation and could be counted on in any situation. He loved to spend time fishing with his grandchildren and relished in all of the shouts of 'Pop' when someone caught a fish or needed assistance baiting a hook. Jim was preceded in death by his father, in 1991; his mother, in 2006; and his brother, H. Paul Capper, in 2003. Jim is survived by his wife, Gwenda, of Whitefield; his two daughters, Angela Harvey and her husband, Robert, of Chelsea, and April Capper, of Whitefield; his grandchildren, Brandon Boucher, Matthew Harvey, Kaleb Boucher and Emma Harvey; and his sisters, Patsy Tieman, Cindy Chandler and her husband, John, Christine Walker and her husband, Joe, and Connie Ebert and her husband, Mike. A memorial service in honor of Jim's life will take place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1 Church St., Augusta. A committal service with full military honors will follow at 2 p.m. at the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
