HALLOWELL -- James Cunnion, 88, of Vaughn Road, died April 2, 2012, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, with his wife and family members by his side. Jim was born in Dunmore, Pa., on Feb. 2, 1924, the son of Thomas J. and Mildred A. (Hedglin) Cunnion. He graduated from Dunmore High School in 1942 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps on April 14, 1942. On Oct. 19, 1950, he married the former Mary Ann McPherson of Hallowell. During his Air Force service, Mary accompanied him on many of his tours of duty, both in the United States and abroad. Jim served 25 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1967 with the rank of chief master sergeant. During World War II, he served with the Chinese American Composite Wing, 14th Air Force; in Korea with the 3rd Bomb Group, 5th Air Force; and with the Military Airlift Command during the Vietnam conflict. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Korean Service Medal, Commendation Ribbon with oak leaf clusters, Good Conduct Medal with five bronze loops, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Star, U.S. NCO Academy Graduate Ribbon, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, World War II Victory Medal and the American Theater Ribbon. He was also employed for 20 years with the Maine Department of Transportation, Bureau of Planning and Bureau of Transportation Services, retiring in 1984. Jim was a life member of The Air Force Association, The Air Force Sergeants Association, The Retired Enlisted Association and the American Legion Goodrich-Caldwell Post No. 6 of Hallowell. He also served as a member of the Farmingdale Planning Board. Jim was predeceased by sister-in-law Patricia McPherson and brothers-in-law Harry McPherson, William Bradley and Robert Trask, all formerly of Hallowell, and Fred Jacobs, formerly of Mount Vernon; as well as his nephew, Mark Jacobs, also formerly of Mount Vernon. Jim is survived by his wife of 61 years; sisters and brothers-in-law Ruth Bradley, Cynthia McPherson, Ernest and Joan McPherson, Eleanor Trask, John McPherson, Linda McPherson, and Alice and Eric Perry, all of Hallowell, and Marjorie Jacobs of Mount Vernon; along with many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He will be greatly missed by all. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 7, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, where a celebration of Jim's life will be held the same day, after the visitation, at 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend Jim's committal service, with full military honors, at Hallowell Cemetery immediately following the service at the funeral home.
