VASSALBORO - John Alton Dalbeck, 80, died Monday, June 30, 2008 at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born in Bridgewater, Maine on June 15, 1928, the son of Leland and Ruby (McDonald) Dalbeck. John enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country in Korea during WWII. Upon his honorable discharge, he worked for Hudson Pulp & Paper, which later became Statler Tissue. Through his strong work ethics he earned not only the respect of his coworkers, but many lasting friendships he cherished for the rest of his life. After 40 years, John retired, although not completely. He continued employment with the mill, often traveling to Mexico in the role of a consultant. To keep busy he later worked part time for Charlie?s Motor Mall in Augusta; a job which he enjoyed immensely. John loved bowling, golfing, and watching his family play sports as well as being a fan of all New England professional sports teams?.no matter what! He also enjoyed going to breakfast with his McDonald?s buddies and worked hard to stay in touch with his friends from the mill. He loved animals of all kinds and especially liked bird watching, but most of all laughing and spending time with his family and friends. He was a very caring man who always wore a smile on his face and had a positive outlook on life. He was loved by all who were fortunate enough to have him in their lives and will be deeply missed. John was predeceased by his parents and a brother, James Dalbeck. He is survived by a son and three daughters and their families, Dana Dalbeck of Sanford, Linda Parlin & husband, Terry, of Oakland and their children, Jen and Nick, Rachael Cummins & husband, Ozzie, of Vassalboro and their children, Wendy Greenleaf & husband, Chad, and Randy Cummings & wife, Julianne, and Deborah Cunningham & husband, Darrin, of Winthrop and their children, Tyler and Allyson; a brother and sister, Elmer Dalbeck and Leona Russell, both of Augusta; as well as many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 4:00 ? 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 6 at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta. A celebration of John?s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the South Parish Congregational Church, Church St., Augusta, with Pastor Virgil Bozeman officiating. A committal service with military honors will follow at Kling Cemetery in Augusta.
