TOGUS - John 'Rodney' Armstrong Sr. 77, of Augusta, died unexpectedly on Saturday, March 26, 2005, at the Togus VA hospital. He was born in Caratunk on Feb. 6, 1928, the son of Gilbert and Bessy (Martin) Armstrong. After finishing school, Rodney joined the Army. Upon his return from the service, he was employed by a tire company for several years until it closed, when he started working for CD&L Transport. He retired in October 2004. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Rodney was very active in outdoor activities and loved working around the house. He loved and enjoyed his grandchildren and his one great-granddaughter, who was his pride and joy. He was predeceased by a son, John Rodney 'Bubba' Armstrong; and several brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Beverley J. Armstrong of Augusta; a son, E. Amos Armstrong and his wife, Kathy, of Randolph; two daughters, Gail A. Armstrong of Augusta and Lisa M. Maxim and her husband, Corey, of Gardiner; nine grandchildren, Dylan and Anissa Armstrong of Augusta, Amanda and Tiffany Allen of Portland, Trista and Bryan Armstrong of Gardiner, John Thomas and Deanna Armstrong of Randolph and Travis Allen of Augusta; a great-granddaughter, Natalya Marie Crowley-Armstrong of Gardiner; and several sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews and cousins. At the family's request, there will be no visiting or service at this time. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta.
