HALLOWELL - Judith Chick Downing died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at home at Granite Hill Estates in Hallowell. The daughter of Arnold L. and Hilda (Williams) Chick, she was born in Haverhill, Mass., on Sept. 25, 1920. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Frederick W. Downing of Hallowell; daughter Jane A. Downing of Pittsburgh; son James A. Downing of Redmond, Wash.; granddaughter Jennifer Downing of Cambridge, Mass.; grandson Garth F. Downing of Redmond; her brother, Lawrence E. Chick of Westerly, R.I.; and by several nieces and cousins. A sister, Marjory, predeceased her. She was a graduate of Watertown High School in Watertown, Mass., and Bates College in Lewiston in 1942. Judith was associated with Camp Aloha in Fairlee, Vt., for 20 summers as bugler, camper, counselor and assistant director. In 1968, she became director and served in that capacity until 1982. In August 2004, she attended the 100th anniversary of the Aloha and was greeted by more than 100 former campers and counselors. Judith was an English teacher from 1959 until 1962 at Montpelier High School in Vermont, and from 1963 to 1976 taught English and Latin at Cony High School in Augusta. In 1983, she began a 14-year stint as administrator of St. Mark's Home for Women in Augusta. A Massachusetts Commonwealth champion bugler, she enjoyed music, especially brass band concerts featuring John Philip Sousa, with whom her father toured for several years. At Bates, she was a state champion tennis player, a sport she taught for many years at Aloha Camp. She was playing doubles with three men until she was 80. An enthusiastic bird watcher, she was a keen observer of gardens in many countries in their 15 years as world travelers. Active in church organizations, she was secretary of her college class for 10 years and held many offices in the Kennebec Valley Garden Club. She was the first director of the Augusta Girls Scouts day camp in Readfield from 1952 to 1954, and assistant director of the Girl Scout Camp Wyaka in Casco in 1955. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Manchester Community Church, with the Rev. Ernest Johnson officiating. In lieu of flowers, her wish would be for support of the Kennebec Valley Humane Society, Pet Haven Lane, Augusta 04330. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta.
