AUGUSTA ~ Julia Ellis, 96, of Augusta, passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday April 1, 2017 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation, Glenridge Drive in Augusta. She was born in Gardiner, February 14, 1921 the youngest of five children of Sidney S. and Julia (Harrington) Benner of Randolph. Julia graduated from Gardiner High School and went on to work for the State of Maine, Unemployment Department for thirty years. After World War II, she married Jefferson Barry “Biff” Ellis, of Augusta in 1947. Julia had a zest for life and spent countless hours traveling, shopping, going on trips to the coast at Boothbay Harbor and Pemaquid as well as many years at Long Lake in Belgrade. Julia was predeceased by her husband of 53 years as well as her brothers, Louis and Frederick and sisters, Nancy E. Lint and husband, Alton and Mary E. Sayward and husband, Robert. She is survived by her niece, Mary-Ellen Engert and her husband, Bruce; her favorite grand-nephew, Bruce E. Engert as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Relatives and friends may visit at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church Street in Augusta, Wednesday April 5, 2017 from Noon to 2:00 p.m. with a service at 2:00.
