EAST WINTHROP - Kay B. Gill, 77, of Winthrop Center Road died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She was born in Highmount, N.Y., on June 19, 1931, the daughter of James and Hazel (Smith) Butler. Kay was a graduate of Wells College in Aurora, N.Y., with a major in art; The Guild for Spiritual Guidance in New York; and General Theological Seminary in New York City, with a master's degree in spirituality. She directed spiritual retreats in Pennsylvania and Maine and served as a spiritual guide to many. Kay was involved in programs at the Living Water Spiritual Center in Winslow, where she created the 'Earth Stations' devotional practice observed during Holy Week. She served as director of the Senior Center in Easton, Pa. She enjoyed watercolor outings with the Kennebec Land Trust. For more than 15 years, she attended Winthrop Center Friends Church, where she was involved with many committees, and also attended St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Augusta. Her love for her family, friends and mankind will leave its imprint in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, the Rev. James L. Gill Sr., of East Winthrop; a son, James L. Gill Jr., of East Winthrop; two daughters, Laura M. Gill-Henry and her husband, Steve, and Christina Reid Gill-Lindsey and her husband, Ray, all of Winthrop; two brothers, Dr. James F. Butler III and his wife, Sally, of Vassalboro, and Bruce R. Butler and his wife, Marcella, of Monmouth; a sister, Alyson M. Butler and her husband, Robert Brundage, of Petaluma, Calif.; four grandchildren, Wes Slingland and Dana Slingland, of Easton, Pa., and C.J. Dupont and Ben Lindsey, both of Winthrop; and two great-grandchildren June Wilson and Alexis Slingland. There will be no visiting hours. A celebration of Kay's life will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 9 Summer St., Augusta.
