AUGUSTA ? Lauretta Mabel Coombs Hawes, 90, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Robinson's Nursing Home in Gardiner. She was born in New Brunswick, Canada, April 9, 1911, the daughter of Adelbert and Theresa Lauretta (Donovan) Coombs. She was a descendant of the Donovans and Mullens of County Cork, Ireland, and Petersville, New Brunswick. Lauretta grew up in Hallowell and graduated from Hallowell High School. She was especially proud of giving the second honors speech at her graduation. She married Charles Alfred Hawes in 1934 and they moved to 7 Maine St. in Augusta, where she was a homemaker and cared for her family. A remarkable woman who learned to drive at the age 65 after her husband's death in 1976, she prized her car and drove until her late 80s. She was an avid Yahtzee player and enjoyed singing and playing the organ. Lauretta loved walking in her neighborhood and adjacent Gannett's Woods, tending to her many plants and flowers, watching and feeding the birds and most of all going to the ocean. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Augusta. Lauretta is survived by her three daughters and their families, Marilyn Ann Civitarese of Gardiner, Janet Katherine Chatterjee and her husband, Manu, of Harpswell, and Linda Mary Paul and her husband, Lester, of Pittston. In addition to her children, she has four grandchildren, Marilyn A. Crochere and her husband, Joseph, of Chelsea, Joan Patrick and her husband, Mark, of Morrow, Ohio, John Scott Jones and his wife, Elizabeth Torraca, of Falmouth, and Julie Anne Springer and her husband, Scott, of Burlington, Vt.; great-grandchildren Douglas Crochere of Chelsea, Daniel Chapman of Ithica, N.Y., Donovan Chapman of Sabattus, Madeleine and Emma Torraca Jones of Falmouth, and Andy and Kate Springer of Burlington; a great-great-grandaughter, Haley Chapman of Sabattus and a great-great-grandson, Joseph Crochere of Chelsea. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and distant cousins in the United States and Canada. Visiting hours will be private. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Hallowell Cemetery, Hallowell. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pine Tree State Arboretum, P.O. Box 344 Augusta 04332. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, Hallowell.
