Obituary

WINTHROP ? Lees Edward King, 87, of Winthrop, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born in Sagerstown, Pa., Aug. 15, 1914, the son of Edward and Amelia (Broome) King. Lees was the son of a Baptist minister and lived in many towns. He served in the Navy in World War II. After the war, he married Gladys McDougall, and shortly after that, he began a career with the U.S. government as a transportation expert. The many jobs he held took him all over the world. He worked for the chief of naval operations in Washington D.C. from 1955 to 1964. He then went to work in England from 1964 to 1969 and finished his career in Norfolk, Va. in 1976. He and his wife moved to Winthrop in 1976. In his spare time, Lees enjoyed golfing at Western View Golf Club and bowling at Interstate Lanes. He also enjoyed painting. Lees is survived by his wife; a son, Leland Eric King and his wife, Sula, of Leesburg, Va.; a daughter, Faith Alice Speidel and her husband, Danny, of East Fairfield, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Edwin A. McDougall and his wife, Louise, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Shawn Lee Speidel and Langdon Eric King. Relatives and friends may visit 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A committal service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery Chapel. Those who wish may make memorial donations to the Winthrop Ambulance Service, City Hall, Winthrop 04364.
