HALLOWELL - Leo P. Soucy, 91, of Benjamin Drive, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, with his family by his side at Augusta Rehabilitation Center where he had resided for 11 days. He was born on May 16, 1919, in Saint Eleuthere, Quebec, Canada, the son of the late Omer J. and Marie L. (Dube) Soucy. He grew up in Sanbornville, N.H., the middle of nine children, where he acquired a strong work ethic and unwavering support of family and friends that continued throughout his life, and which he proudly modeled for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Leo, nicknamed Pete, attended Sanbornville schools and Nute High School in Milton, N.H., where he was a member of the class of 1937. He left high school in his sophomore year to support himself, and was later drafted during the first draft of World War II. From 1941 to 1943, he served as a drill instructor in the United States Army, 241st Coast Artillery, Fort Heath, Mass., attaining the rank of sergeant. On Jan. 7, 2011, he received his high school diploma from Maranacook Community High School and happily shared a graduation cake with his family, recognizing his membership in the high school classes of 1937 and 2011. Pete married the former Phyllis W. Marsh at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Sanbornville on Nov. 8, 1941, and they enjoyed 65 years of marriage until her death in 2007. They resided in Malden, Mass., for 30 years where they raised their children and cared for Phyllis's parents, J. Frank and Nellie Marsh. After discharge from the Army, he began work at the Boston Naval Shipyard in Charlestown, Mass., retiring after 30 years as a maintenance electrician. In 1971, Pete and Phyllis retired to Limerick, where he remodeled their summer camp on Lake Sokokis into a year-round home. He continued to work for another 10 years in construction, at Limerick Footwear, and at St. Matthew's Church. He took pride in maintaining their warm home and beautiful grounds, and reveled in entertaining their grandchildren and great-grandchildren there for 26 years. In 1997, they moved to Augusta, where they enjoyed 10 years at Town & Country Apartments with their beloved cat, Minnie. Pete's loving care for Phyllis in her years of declining health was inspirational to everyone who knew them. It was during this time that Pete began playing cribbage at the Cohen and Buker centers with a wonderfully supportive group of people who became an important part of his life. He had resided with his daughter and her family in Hallowell since 2007. In addition to his parents and wife, Pete was predeceased by his beloved brothers, Edgar 'Jeff,' Armand 'AJ,' Roger 'Alphonse,' and the Rev. Louis; and his sisters, Rita, Marie and Yvette. Survivors include his son, Peter R. Soucy and wife, Priscilla, of Melrose, Mass.; and his daughter, Deborah A. Leugers, and husband, Larry, of Hallowell. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Scott P. Soucy and wife, LeeAnn, of Melrose; Kristen B. White and her husband, John, of Melrose; Benjamin I. and wife, Elizabeth, of Upton, Mass.; and Jonathan Leugers of Hallowell. He was the proud great-grandfather of Savhanna, Sydney and Shae Soucy, of Melrose, Isabella and Jasper Leo White, of Melrose, and Amelia and Ian Soucy, of Upton. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Joseph, and wife, Lorraine Soucy, of Rochester, N.H.; his brother-in-law, Franklin and his wife, Peg Marsh, of Newburyport, Mass.; his sister-in-law, Dorcas Knight, of Sanbornville; and by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held in Sanbornville at a later time.
