WINTHROP - Lucille B. (Jackson) Johnson, 86, of Winthrop died Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She was born in Augusta on Sept. 28, 1923, the daughter of Millard K. and Mary (Dudley) Jackson. Lucille was a graduate of Winthrop High School and Gates Business College in Augusta. During the 1940s, Lucille was employed by the San Bernadino Army Air Base in California and then by the United States Department of Agriculture in Hallowell. In 1987, she retired from the Maine State Department of Education after 34 years of service, working as an accountant and, later, as the director of the Division of Management Information. While with the education department, she was the recipient of the Maine State Superintendent's Distinctive Service Award and the Maine State School Association Outstanding Service Award. Lucille received special recognition from Govs. James Longley and Joseph Brennan and the Maine Legislature. She served on several special study committees as a result of her knowledge of the state school spending laws and formulas. Lucille was a member of a retirees group of the Maine State Employees Association and MAR. She was a member of the Winthrop Center Friends Church and served as its treasurer for several years. Since her retirement, she had worked on many church suppers and fairs. She loved her family and friends. She was a great cook and loved family gatherings. Lucille was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 35 years, Francis E. 'Jim' Johnson, on Feb. 9, 1985; and her brother, Philip D. Jackson. She is survived by a daughter, Wendy Johnson and her husband, John LaSuer, of Rye, N.H.; two sons, Gary E. Johnson and his wife, Barbara, of Portland, and Thomas M. Johnson, of Winthrop; six grandchildren, Jessica Stevenson and her husband, Andrew, of South Portland, Justin Hotham, of Leeds, Brian, Kevin and Stephen Johnson, all of Portland, and Ross Keliher, of Augusta; three sisters, Pauline Cobb, of Dania Beach, Fla., Ann Preble, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Clare Cowan, of Seattle; a brother, Paul Jackson and his wife, Earlene, of Monmouth and Spring Hill, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Jackson, of Winthrop; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may visit 4-7 p.m. Friday at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Winthrop Center Friends Church. Burial will follow at East Winthrop Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Winthrop Center Friends Church, 219 Winthrop Center Road, Winthrop, ME 04364; or the American Diabetes Association, Maine Chapter, 80 Elm St., Portland, ME 04101.
