Obituary

AUGUSTA- Marie Kahill Brotherton, 86, was surrounded by her family when she passed away on April 16th, 2007 at Augusta Rehabilitation Center after a three year battle with lung cancer. She was born in Portland on May 17th, 1920, the daughter of Joseph B?shara, renowned portrait artist, and Loretto (Moran) Kahill. Marie was a graduate of Portland High School and Northeastern Business College. Over the years she was a model and actress in the Portland area. Other employment included managing the record department at Cressey & Allen and as a medical secretary at the Maine Eye & Ear Infirmary, both located in Portland. She also served as a secretary at Republican Headquarters and with the Maine Legislature in the 1960?s and 1970?s. Marie spent numerous hours doing volunteer work for the Republican Party and was a member of the Women?s Kennebec Republican Club. She was also a Justice of the Peace, having married over 70 couples. Marie was predeceased by her husband, Lt. Col. G.W. Brotherton, on Feb. 19, 1996; her sister, Estella Hayes; her brother, Charles Fox Kahill; and a step grandson, Michael Durkee. She is survived by her best friend and companion, Mikki; her son and daughter, G.W. ?Bud? Brotherton Jr. & his wife, Mary, and Laurie Southard, both of Augusta; five grandchildren, Jean Marie Scrima of Lakeland, FL, Ben J. Southard of Augusta, Jon J. Brotherton of Lewiston, Betsy Marie Southard of Gardiner and Derek Payne Brotherton of Augusta; one great granddaughter and great grandson, Izabella Bickford and Noah Scrima; one step grandson, Thomas Durkee & his wife, Kim, of Waldoboro; and four step great grandsons, Zachary, Kyle, and Isaac Durkee of Waldoboro and Cameron Durkee of Southwest Harbor. At Marie?s request, there will be no public visitation of funeral service. A private graveside service will be held this summer for Marie and her beloved sister, Estella, at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Augusta. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marie?s memory may be made to the American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State St., Augusta, ME 04330-5615. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, One Church St., Augusta.
