NORTH MONMOUTH - Mary Ann Merrill, 79, died Sunday, January 8, 2012 at Heritage Manor in Winthrop with her husband Richard and her family by her side. She was born in Auburn on January 13, 1932, the daughter of Harland A. and Catherine (Berry) Littlefield. She had been a longtime resident of Manley Street in Augusta. She was educated in Auburn area schools and graduated from Edward Little High School in1950. She later graduated from the Maine School of Commerce in Auburn, and attended the University of Maine, Orono. A homemaker for most of her life, she also taught piano lessons from her home. Mary Ann was an accomplished musician, having played piano at Buker Middle School and Cony High School for various plays and performances over many years. She played the organ at the Universalist Church in Augusta and at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home for over 20 years. She was a member of the Rose of Sharon, Order of Eastern Star, Augusta, where she also played the organ, and she was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Mary Ann enjoyed sewing, flower gardening and having lunch out with special friends. She had a reputation within her family for being a wonderful cook. She was predeceased by a brother John P. Littlefield of Littleton, Massachusetts. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Richard W. Merrill of North Monmouth; a daughter Anne Merrill and her partner Jon Capozza of North Monmouth; a son Thomas R. Merrill and his wife Cheryl B. of Reading MA.; five grandchildren, Heather Straz and her husband Nate of North Monmouth, Starcia Erving and her husband Tony of Augusta, Jennifer Lynn Merrill and Alison Lee Merrill, of Reading, MA.; and Caleb M. Jackson of Wayne; also three nephews. There will be no visiting hours. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, January, 14, at Knowlton Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta.
