EAST READFIELD ?Max L. McKenney, 88, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Heritage Rehabilitation and Living Center, Winthrop. He was born in East Readfield on April 18, 1914, the son of James Newell and Sarah Lena (Clough) McKenney. Max was educated at Kents Hill School. After high school, he served in the Army during World War II. For most of his working years, Max was employed in various positions with Noyes Tire Co., retiring in 1980. He was a member of Readfield Senior Citizens and Augusta Senior Citizens. Max enjoyed the outdoors and playing cards, but most of all, he loved to bowl. He will be missed by his family and friends and remembered for being a very loving man with a wonderful, playful sense of humor. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret E. McKenney, who died March 2, 1989; a son, Norman F. McKenney, on July 2, 2000; three brothers, Harry, William and Carroll McKenney; and two sisters, Lena Parks and Emerald Newman. He is survived by three sons, Richard McKenney and his wife Alice of Augusta, Alton McKenney and his wife Mary of North Wayne and Herbert McKenney of East Readfield; a sister, Freda Black of Winthrop; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to visit 11 a.m.-noon Thursday, April 3, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, where a funeral service will follow at noon. Max's close friend, Arthur Strout, will give the eulogy, and the Rev. Jan Davis, from Green Street United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial and committal prayers will be held after the service, at 1 p.m., in Father LeClair Memorial Chapel at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
