Obituary

WINTHROP - Maxine Annette Pray, 61, of Winthrop, died unexpectedly Monday, Aug. 2, 2010. Maxine was born Sept. 18, 1948, in Augusta, the daughter of Emory and Dora (Dumont) Harris. She grew up in Winthrop and was a 1966 graduate of Winthrop High School, where she was a majorette and traveled to Washington, D.C., to perform at the Kennedy inauguration with the Winthrop High School Band. On Sept. 4, 1966, she married Robert Pray of Hallowell at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in North Monmouth; they were the first couple to be married there. Their family was soon complete with the arrival of daughters Kristina and Alexandra. While caring for her two young daughters, she earned her associate degree in business administration from the University of Maine in Augusta. In addition to raising her own daughters, she also cared for many other children. Later, she was a systems analyst at Digital Equipment Corp. In recent years, she also cared for her aging parents. She loved the mountains and water, especially her camp on Cobbossee Lake, where she and Robert spent most of their summers; and going to ocean beaches. In her younger years, she enjoyed visiting her parents in Florida and going to Disney World with her husband and children. She enjoyed gardening and traveling. In 1982, she took her family on an unforgettable tour of Europe; and in 1986, she traveled to France with her daughter. Her family was the light of her life, especially her granddaughters, Annika and Olivia. She was there for both of their births and spent time in Massachusetts caring for them in the first months of their lives. Maxine loved animals, but most of all her beloved Gabrielle, a 16-year-old Jack Russell who was her constant companion and her third 'daughter'; as well her sweet cat, Kitty. She will be deeply missed by her husband of 44 years, Robert Pray, of Winthrop; her daughters, Kristina Busenitz and her husband, John, of Clinton, Mass., and Alexandra Dumont and her husband, Joe, of Stowe, Mass.; and her two granddaughters, Annika and Olivia. A gathering for relatives and friends will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6. Burial will be in Hallowell Cemetery. Donations may be made in Maxine's memory to the National Fibromyalgia Association, 2121 Southtowne Centre Place, Suite 300, Anaheim, CA 92806; or online at www.fmaware.org/donations.
