EAST WINTHROP ? Melvin D. Watson, 78, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, after a brief illness. He was born in Winthrop on Sept. 5, 1924, the son of Melvin D. and Winifred M. (Kaherl) Watson. He was educated in Winthrop schools and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1942. He served in the Navy in both World War II and the Korean War. He was a Mason for 55 years and was a member of Kora Temple Shrine. Mel retired from the U.S. Post Office as a rural carrier in 1979. Mel was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Ernestine. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen (Lincoln) Watson; his daughter and son-in-law, Jane Ann (Watson) and Richard E. Perkins; his grandson, Brian A. Perkins and his beloved cat, Punkin, all of East Winthrop. Mel was also survived by his cousins, nieces, nephews, and many special friends. At his request, there will be no visiting hours. A private service and internment will be held at a later date at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, following cremation.
