MANCHESTER - Oliver S. Cromwell Sr., 94, of Manchester died Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Maine Veterans' Home, Augusta, after a short illness. He was born in Yarmouth on Dec. 19, 1915, the son of Oliver and Minnie Cromwell. Oliver attended Richmond schools, graduated from business college in 1959 and was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He had been employed as a carpenter, a cobbler at Hallowell Shoe, a nursing aide at the Veterans Affairs Hospital at Togus, and a security guard for Statler Tissue. After retirement, he worked for a while at Bonanza Restaurant on Western Avenue in Augusta. Oliver was a self-taught handyman and a wonderful, loving caregiver to his wife, Priscilla, before she passed away 13 years ago. He also loved hunting and fishing, as he became a guide at a very young age. Oliver was predeceased by a son, Sidney Cromwell; his two sisters, Evelyn and Frances; and his only brother, Wallace Cromwell. He is survived by his daughter, Margo Speck, of Manchester; a son, Oliver S. Cromwell Jr. and his wife, Annette, of Hallowell; his stepdaughters, Audrey Whitten and her husband, Maynard, of Manchester, and Gloria Douglas and her husband, Merle, of Leeds; a stepson, Lawrence Danforth and his wife, Donna, of Machias; grandson Nickolas Cromwell and his wife, Clarise, of Maryland; stepgrandson Anthony Danforth and his wife, Diane, of Machias; and many other grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed visiting his family very much. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, March 12, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, where a celebration of Oliver's life will be held at 2 p.m. following the visitation. A committal service with full military honors will be held graveside at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, at the old Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
