WINTHROP - Priscilla Smith-Cranshaw, 91, formerly of Augusta, died Monday, May 25, 2009, at Winthrop Manor. She was born in Boston on July 12, 1917, the daughter of Hariph M. and Susan (Murdock) Smith, of Oxford, Mass. Priscilla was a 1935 graduate of David Prouty High School in Spencer, Mass., and attended Massachusetts State College in Amherst, Mass., transferring and graduating from Bryant and Stratton College in Boston. She was living in Arlington Heights, Mass., and working for H.P. Nichols in Boston when she married Stanley A. Smith, of Sanford, on Oct. 14, 1944. She and Stanley lived in Augusta for most of their married life. After raising her family, she worked at Burgess & Leith Inc., of Augusta, retiring in 1983. After the death of Stanley on June 22, 1988, Priscilla married Henry L. Cranshaw, on March 31, 1990. Priscilla felt very honored to be a part of Henry's family. Priscilla was a member of South Parish Congregational Church, where she served as a trustee, was a member of the Guild and Evening Circle, and was active on many committees. She was a former treasurer and trustee of Fort Western Museum, a former volunteer of the Hospice of Kennebec Valley, and a volunteer and on the board of the Augusta Area Food Bank. Since 1924, Priscilla had spent her summers in her cottage in Menemsha on Martha's Vineyard Island, where she enjoyed the company of family and friends. Here, she was instrumental in founding the Menemsha Water Company, of which she became a commissioner. For many years, she was a member of the Dukes County Historical Society. Mrs. Smith-Cranshaw was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Harriet Baker, formerly of Berlin, Conn., and Newton Junction, N.H.; and her husbands, Stanley Smith and Henry Cranshaw. Priscilla is survived by a daughter, Carol B. Whittier and her husband, Doug, of Winthrop; two sons, Hariph M. Smith and his wife, Ginger, of Winthrop, and Philip M. Smith and his companion, Mary Jo Joiner, of Kenai, Alaska; four grandsons, Jonathan Whittier and his wife, Eleonora, and their daughter, Sienna, of Tucson, Ariz., Daniel Whittier and his fianc?e, Crystal Potter, and her children, Jasmine and Jared, of Vienna, Nathaniel Smith and his wife, Megan, and their daughter, Evelyn, of South Portland, and Christopher Smith, of Menemsha, Martha's Vineyard, Mass.; a nephew, James Baker, of Newton Junction; Henry's daughter, Caroline Stevens, of Seminole, Fla., and son Thomas Cranshaw and his wife, Diane, of Leawood, Kan., as well as two grandchildren, Susan Davis and her husband, Seth, of Ocean Park, and Robert Stevens and his wife, Laura, and their three children, of Slingerlands, N.Y. The family is very appreciative of the compassionate care Priscilla received at Winthrop Manor, where she had resided for the last four years. Relatives and friends may visit from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 31, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A celebration of life will take place at noon June 1 at Winthrop Congregational Church UCC, Monday, June 1, with the Rev. Karen Janus officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service. Interment will be at a later date in the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery.
