AUGUSTA - The Rev. Donald Manning Hinckley, 88, died in Augusta on Oct. 13, 2008, following an extended period of declining health. He was an ordained minister of the Universalist Unitarian faith, having actively served for 60 years. The Rev. Hinckley graduated from high school in Windsor, Vt.; attended Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt.; and attained a bachelor's of theology from Bangor Theological Seminary and a master of divinity in 1946. He was a graduate of Colby College in 1946. He served parishes in Waterville, Pittsfield, West Paris, Auburn and Houlton, and Worcester, Mass. His most recent work was for the Oakland Maine All Souls UU Church. During his early years in the UU denomination, he served many administrative positions with the Northeast District of the UUA. He was beloved by all of his many parishioners. Don played tennis until his 84th year. He was a scholar, a student of the opera and classical music. He enjoyed his hobby of hi-fi. In his early years, he served on school boards in Pittsfield and Auburn and volunteered at Goodwill Industries. The Rev. Hinckley was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Burton; and a sister, Marjorie. His wife of 29 years, Rosalyn (Ingalls) Hinckley, survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Marsha Donahue Curlew and her husband, Wayne, of Millinocket and grandson Taylor Donahue, of Portland; son Glenn Hinckley and his wife, Linda, of West Sumner and granddaughters Jennifer Waterman, Sarah Hinckley, Hannah Flannery and Emily Ellis; and three great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons. Also surviving are stepdaughters Nell Ingalls, of Illinois, and Candice (Ingalls) Hinckley, of Pennsylvania; a brother, Gerald Hinckley; a sister, Mary Lou Lamphere; his former wife, Barbara Sprague Hinckley, of Auburn; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service for the family will be held in Auburn at Gracelawn Memorial Park at a later date. Don's family wishes to thank all the many caregivers who so patiently and kindly helped with his care.
