Obituary

AUGUSTA - Rhya L. Seligman, 92, of Augusta, died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. Rhya was born in New York City on Feb. 22, 1916, the daughter of Morris and Ida Levine. She was raised in New York and graduated from Washington Irving High School. At the start of World War II, Rhya enlisted in the Women's Army Corps. She was stationed in Australia where she served in the Signal Corps. After the war, Rhya obtained a commercial art degree in New York and worked for several years as a commercial artist. Rhya moved to Bethlehem, N.H., in 1947 and worked as a hostess at a White Mountains resort. It was there that she met her husband, Dr. Morris J. Seligman, whom she married May 8, 1949. Rhya came to Augusta with her family in 1958 and had been a resident of Augusta ever since. She was a devoted wife and mother and was also actively involved in her community. She served as president of the Friends of the Lithgow Library for many years and also volunteered at MaineGeneral Medical Center. She was a member of Temple Beth El in Augusta. Mrs. Seligman is survived by her husband, Dr. Morris J. Seligman; her daughter, Martha Seligman of South China; and with many nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. Spring burial will take place at a later date in Beth Jacob Cemetery, Concord, N.H.
