MOUNT VERNON - Richard William Coakley, 20, of Mount Vernon, a student attending Maine Maritime Academy as a second class regiment midshipman, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, in Stockton Springs, the result of an automobile accident. He was born in Winchester, Mass., on May 1, 1988, the son of Richard J. Coakley and Karen L. Hanson. He grew up in Massachusetts and Mount Vernon and was a 2006 graduate of Maranacook Community High School. While in high school, Richard played hockey for the Black Bears. He also was a volunteer for the Mount Vernon Fire Department from the age of 12. Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, working on cars and helping to remodel houses. He loved just about any outdoor activity and had even tried skydiving. He was also involved in the Merchant Marine Reserve Program. He had friends from several generations. He is survived by his mother, Karen Hanson, of Mount Vernon; his father, Richard J. Coakley, of Tewksbury, Mass.; his brother, Joseph Baxter Coakley and his fianc?e, Maryann Dunn, of Mount Vernon; his sister, Sara Elizabeth Coakley, of Mount Vernon; his maternal grandmother, Violet Hanson, of Farmington, formerly of Winchester, Mass.; his paternal grandparents, Richard and Ruth Coakley, of Winchester; along with several aunts, uncles, and cousins and his many friends. Relatives and friends may visit from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Mount Vernon Community Cemetery, North Road, Mount Vernon. Memorial donations may be made in Richard's name to the Maine Maritime Academy Scholarship Fund, 101 Leavitt Hall, Castine, ME 04420.
